An overdraft happens when you pay for something but don’t have enough money in your account. Overdrafts have a bad reputation but having options can be useful for some people. When you set up an overdraft protection option, you can choose the best way to manage your money and make every penny count.
Let’s take a look at your options.
Line of Credit
You can link a line of credit* to your checking account to keep your balance from going negative. When you don’t have enough money in your checking account for a bill or purchase, we’ll automatically use your line of credit to cover the cost.
Imagine you’re at the grocery store, and you’re not sure if you have enough money in your account. Instead of debating whether to use a high-interest credit card, you can just use your debit card knowing you’re covered.
There’s no charge for transferring from your line of credit to your checking account, but standard finance charges apply to loan balances.
Courtesy Pay is a service that lets you stress less when you’re paying bills and making purchases. If you don’t have enough money in your account (or on your line of credit) to cover a transaction, Courtesy Pay can kick in and cover the cost for you.
Courtesy Pay is automatically available for checks, electronic account-to-account transactions (known as ACH payments), and recurring debit card payments. You can also sign up to make Courtesy Pay available for your everyday debit card transactions. If you change your mind, you can remove Courtesy Pay at any time by visiting your nearest Centra location.
There’s a $29 service charge each time Courtesy Pay is used for transactions greater than $10.00, with a maximum of three Courtesy Pay service charges per day. Opportunity accounts are not eligible for Courtesy Pay.
Your Courtesy Pay limit will depend on which account you have. High Interest Checking and special titled accounts have a $700 limit, while business accounts have a $1000 limit. Cashback Checking limits are based on your tier. Click here to review the tiers.
Savings Account Transfers
You can also link your savings account to your checking account. If you don’t have enough money for a transaction, we’ll automatically use your savings account. There’s no charge for transfers from your savings account.
